ORGANIC URBAN GARDEN AT FAO

THE PROJECT
This project, promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and funded by NaturaSi, addressed the issues of crop biodiversity, sustainability and urban resilience. It consists of a mobile modular system with the function of an urban organic garden positioned on the terrace of the FAO headquarters in Rome.
The elements, conceived as containers clad in COR-TEN steel, have been optimized to cover the space in an organic and original way, and are based on two slightly different triangular types that can be combined along the edges. The combinations that can be obtained through this tessellation are virtually infinite, allowing great scalability and flexibility.
By integrating a series of new technologies such as Phytoremediation, Machine learning and Spectrography, the final goal is to create optimized combinations of plants managed by an outdoor automation system, with the aim of keeping them flourishing using the minimum amount of water and care. Bringing science back to the service of nature and humanity, this is our motto.
At the moment, together with La Sapienza, we are testing an AI controlled irrigation system for water saving. As this is a work in progress, we will then experiment with hyperspectral sensors and cameras in order to anticipate potential crop problems.
